The Marine Technology Society (MTS) San Diego Chapter is proud to offer an exciting Summer Internship Program for students passionate about marine technology. This program is specifically designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are eager to gain hands-on experience in the field of marine technology while spending their summer in the vibrant San Diego area.

Applications are due by March 15th of each calendar year. Selected interns will be notified by April 30th, and the program will run from June through August.

  • The MTS San Diego Chapter Internship Program provides a unique opportunity for students to work closely with industry professionals, researchers, and innovators in the marine technology sector. San Diego, a hub for marine research, defense, and technology development, offers a rich environment for learning and practical application. This internship is designed to immerse students in cutting-edge projects that contribute to the advancement of oceanographic research, marine robotics, renewable energy, environmental monitoring, and underwater exploration.

  • Hands-On Experience: Interns will work on real-world projects, gaining experience in areas such as oceanographic instrumentation, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), sonar technology, and marine data analysis.

Mentorship: Each intern will be paired with a seasoned professional or researcher from leading organizations in the marine technology field, including academic institutions, private companies, and government agencies.

Workshops and Networking: Throughout the summer, interns will have access to exclusive workshops, industry panels, and networking events hosted by MTS and its partner organizations. These sessions are designed to provide interns with insights into industry trends, career development, and the latest innovations in marine technology.

Fieldwork Opportunities: Depending on the project, interns may have opportunities to participate in fieldwork, including research cruises, equipment testing, and environmental data collection along the California coastline and surrounding oceanic regions.

  • Enrolled Students: The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in an accredited institution at the time of application.

Interest in Marine Technology: Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in marine technology, oceanography, or a related field, with coursework or project experience in areas such as robotics, engineering, environmental science, or data analytics.

San Diego Residency: Applicants must either reside in the San Diego area or be available to relocate to the area for the summer program, as the internship requires on-site participation.

Transportation: Students will be required to have reliable transportation to and from their internship.
