October 24, 2019. Monthly Speaker Meeting at American Legion, Post #460.
SPEAKER: Carson Black, Team Lead of the Human Powered Submarine at UCSD.
TOPIC: The Human-Powered Submarine team (HPS) of UC San Diego is a competitive project team that designs, constructs, and competes with a human-propelled, fully flooded submarine. Each year students dedicate their time to manufacturing and testing their submarine in preparation for the International Submarine Races (ISR) in Bethesda, Maryland, and, more recently, the European International Submarine Races (eISR) in Gosport, UK. Students on the team come from a variety of backgrounds and majors in order to develop skills in machining, CAD, composites, and leadership. Many have gone on to pursue research or internships related to their work on the team. While the students’ specific interests are varied, their dedication and enthusiasm are reflected in their final product.

August 22, 2019. Monthly Speaker Meeting at American Legion, Post #460.
SPEAKER: Joe Hughes. Topic: HISTORY OF HYDRO PRODUCTS. In the ’60s and ’70s San Diego became a hotbed of research and development in the various marine technologies. Scripps Institution of Oceanography was flourishing. The Navy laboratories were doing well in advanced electronic systems and ocean technology of all sorts. Both offshore oil and deep ocean mining were booming. And there were developmental activities related to submarine warfare and naval special warfare. We saw an array of small companies spring up around the San Diego area, both from people leaving these government activities and starting businesses, and from people leaving the local aerospace companies and starting companies to bring their aerospace skills to meet ocean technology requirements. With the blossoming of the offshore oil industry and a promising start at deep ocean mining, many of these small companies flourished and grew to respectable size. With the disappearance of the ocean mining industry, and the retrenchment of the offshore oil industry in the early ’80s, many of these young companies went away or were acquired by larger companies. But San Diego has continued to maintain a basic infrastructure of smaller high-tech companies serving the needs of the various ocean industries. This paper describes the activities of a company called Hydro Products during this period.

May 23, 2019. Monthly Speaker Meeting at American Legion, Post #460.
Speaker: Kevin Hardy, (founder Global Ocean Design, retired SIO, past MTS Chair). TOPIC: San Diego’s Astounding History of Exploration. Nestled on the sandy shores of southern California, San Diego is renowned as a laid-back place with easy-going people. Yet somehow between the margaritas and surfboards, this sleepy little beach town, born in 1769, has been a powerhouse of invention and exploration. From the first European settlement in the state of California, to building famous flying machines that first flew across the Atlantic and first put an American into orbit, from developing a breakthrough undersea manned habitat, to developing technology to dive the deepest ocean trench, from predicting surf conditions at Normandy for the WWII’s D-Day landing, to helping advance basic understanding of the human genome, to designing cameras that presently orbit Mars and the moon.
